Meltex Plasma Technology Achieves Breakthrough in CVD Polycrystalline Diamond Polishing
23 Mar, 2026
AUSTIN, Texas – March 22, 2026 – PRLog — Austin, Texas Meltex Plasma Technology today announced a major advance in CVD polycrystalline diamond wafer fabrication. The company double side lapped and polished a freestanding as-grown diamond wafer: 60 mm diameter, 0.45mm thickness to <5 nm Ra surface roughness while removing only 75 µm of material, using a proprietary in-house mechanical polishing system.
This low-loss result makes the wafer ideal for thermal management and optical applications such as GPU cooling, high-power electronics, precision optics, photonics, lasers, and advanced imaging—where high thermal conductivity and nanoscale smoothness are essential.
The breakthrough was enabled by Meltex’s affordable lapping and polishing technology, designed for hard, slow-growing polycrystalline CVD diamond to achieve sub-5 nm finishes economically with minimal waste.
“High-quality polycrystalline CVD diamond is energy-intensive and grows slowly,” said John Liang, Technical Director at Meltex Plasma Technology. “For GPU cooling and high-power lasers, every micron of material loss affects viability. Achieving both sides <5 nm Ra on 60 mm diameter pure diamond wafer with only 75 µm removed proves our affordable technology’s effectiveness and enables cost-effective diamond substrates for thermal and optical markets.”
Meltex is now releasing this specialized lapping and polishing equipment for sale, enabling labs and manufacturers to produce similar freestanding diamond wafers in-house and accelerate adoption in electronics and optics.
This milestone highlights Meltex’s focus on in-house innovation in diamond synthesis, plasma etching, and precision finishing for low-defect freestanding diamond wafers in next-generation semiconductors and thermal solutions.
